I spent 23 years in the U.S. Air Force. The majority of my time was spent dealing with classified and cryptographic information. I spent time in Greenland, Iceland, 8 yrs in Germany and several stateside assignments. While stationed at NORAD, I carried the keys to authorize the release of nuclear weapons or scramble aircraft. I retired in 1990 where I was advisor to the Tennessee Air National Guard, for 5 years in Nashville, TN. After retirement I did a little bit of everything from selling windows, doors and siding to insurance and cars. My last couple jobs, I was district manager for a furniture company and I was a branch manager for a loan company. Now I am retired and enjoying grandkids from Virginia, Missouri and Bangkok, Thailand. My wife and I retired to Florida about 3 years ago and love the beach and relaxation. 50 years!  I can't be the only one to say "Wow!"

I really wish I could be at this 50th Reunion; I'd love to see my old classmates, not to mention tour the building.

The time since high school has been filled with family, work, military, and education. My wife, Mary, and I have two adult children who live out West. We both grew up in Highland Park and have continued to live in Lake County.

After graduating from college, I joined the Marine Corps Reserve. When I returned from active duty, I went back to school to study information technology. My career started upon completion of the program and throughout my career I continued going to school part-time culminating in a doctorate degree. After retiring as CIO of Lake County, most of my time is spent on projects around the house, traveling to visit our kids, and volunteering at church.

I'm extraordinarily grateful to have arrived at this point in life with my loving partner of 42 years and my two remarkable sons as my best friends.  I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to be a full-time mother, and to spend some interstitial time as a reading specialist, children's bookseller, and writer.  I lived on the east coast for many years, but raised my kids in Evanston.  Two years ago, our family moved to Marin County in California. Mountains!  Who knew?  I'm proud to be a member of the generation that struggled for civil rights and an end to the war in Viet Nam.  Looks like it's time to drag our old asses out into the streets again, folks! After graduation went to U of Wis, Madison for 2 years. Didn't finish-but went to work for GD Searle, a pharmaceutical co. Then married in 1972 and moved to Texas in 1975 with a 6-week old son. Never looked back and love living in Spring. Texas has been very good to us -most of our family is here now. And our Texas friends are our family, too. So fast forward to 3 kids, owning a gift shop for 10 years and working for the best oral surgeon in the Houston area. Still working and enjoying my 7 grandkids. I am so very lucky that all are nearby, so I get to be involved in their lives. We have had so many wonderful experiences and can tell some good stories about hurricanes and tornadoes. Would never trade any of it. Send Shelley a MessageSend Shelley a Message

Field Services Director, Illinois Association of School Boards 2 None :-( Red Oak Barbara
My husband, Rand, and I have been married for 42 years, and have two children: Sarah, 38 years old, a criminal defense attorney; and David, 35 years old, a professional photographer.

After graduating from U. of IL. in music education, I taught music for 7 years before becoming a "stay-at-home-mom" to raise our two children. I then worked for the Illinois State Board of Education for 13 years in a project for students with disabilities, and have now worked for 14 years for the Illlinois Association of School Boards as a Field Services Director facilitating professional development/board training for school boards in DuPage, Lake, and north Cook counties.

In my "other" life, I love to read, go to concerts, and I served on my local board of education for 16 years (14 years as president). I am also an avid runner, and ran my first marathon at age 60. This October I will be running the Chicago Marathon, my 15th marathon.

Electrical Engineer / Store Clerk Married 2 6 Red Oak David
Dear Classmates,
Life has been good to me. I have been blessed with a loving wife, Arlene, two children, Sharon and Ari, and six grandchildren.

I had an excellent education at Deerfield High School and the University of Illinois. I remember Harold Benson in eight grade playing with something new – he called it a “computer.” It prepared me as an electrical engineer. I worked for Motorola, Northrop-Grumman, and Beltone. As I am slowing down I now work part time at Menards.  My kids are older than my current boss – sweet.

My game is football.  The peak of my career was playing fullback for the Mighty Midgets in eighth grade.  For the past 30 years I have been playing touch football from September through March – though at a slower and slower pace.  Chicago winters are great for equalizing speed against younger competition.

I made good friends at Red Oak.  Good people, kind people – and very smart! I wonder what happened to Harriet Kang?

I owe my faith to my parents and grandparents.  My parents fled Vienna, Austria to make a better life for themselves and their children – they succeeded. I am proud that my son Ari is a rabbi.

Counselor Se-REM.com Married 2 Wilmot David
What a great website. Thanks to those who have gone to such trouble. So interesting and fun to read about what others have done in the last 50 years. I earned a BS in English at Iowa State University, where I met my future wife Kay. We attended the University of Iowa and received MSWs. We moved to Arizona in 1980, and have had a private counseling practice for 35 years. We have two adult children who are both married and living in SF. Have done some world travel, play golf for fun and exercise, and enjoy still working. Latest project is a self help CD (Se-REM.com)  that I expect will keep me busy even after we retire. Still have an active life style, and so glad to trade the Midwest winters for the AZ summer heat. Best wishes to all. Send Dave a MessageSend Dave a Message

Looking forward to my first reunion (I think!)...it will be fun to touch base with a few people I grew up with so long ago....wait, can it really be that long? I've been living in Washington State for 40 years and married to Dick Johnson (1963 DHS) for 44 years. One grown daughter who has given us two rambunctious grandboys. We get back to Deerfield quite often for family visits but are always happy to return home. I never miss the Illinois winters or summers!
