John Aiston

Deceased Date: 1990-09-22
Jan Chester - November 2nd, 2021
John Aiston was one of a kind. He exemplified integrity in everything he did. He and I were one of only four senior football players who admitted to being at Don Dahlstrom's beer bash and were summarily kicked off the team for our honesty.

John was probably the toughest guy I've ever known. I've seen him tear into, and win, against much larger foes.

During the summer of 1969, John and I hitch-hiked from Deerfield to San Fransisco. I'll never know how we servived that trip. We were 19 years old. We spent many evenings at the Filmore West listening to now famous artists.

He was one of my very best friends and I think about him often.

Hope you are in a great place, Johnny.

Love you man.

Chris Bach - September 14th, 2017
John was quite a character and I remember sitting next to him junior year in American History. He usually fell asleep about halfway through the class. I have to say I could not blame him:-) Also spent the first week or so at Whitewater Wisconsin playing cards with John, Scott Riesche and Barb Rich in the student union. It was nice to be with those familiar faces as we were adjusting to college.
Jim Dougherty - August 14th, 2017
John was one of the two linebackers, along with Mike Flint, that helped our team to an undefeated season. John went to UW, Whitwater, same as me, after DHS and joined a fraternity there. We once hitchhiked in the dead of winter to Deerfield to attend Gerry Carper's wedding. He left Whitewater but returned once on his motorcycle. I hopped on the back, and we cruzed downtown looking for fun, only to get arrested for not wearing helmets - not required in Illinois but required in Wisconsin. He died too young.

Bill Anderson

Bill was a really good guy. So sorry to hear of his passing. Wish I'd known him better.

Pat Schulze - August 29th, 2017
My dear friend, I miss your silly laugh. The last time I saw you, I cried. It was in Yuma where we agreed to meet half way between Tucson and San Diego.

Thomas "Mike" Barrett

Chris Bach - September 14th, 2017
Was so sorry to hear about Mike's passing. I visited him in LA after our 20th and had a great time. We went to so many places, and I got to see a pet tiger he and a previous girlfriend had. He was an interesting guy and enjoyed his life as a gaffer in Hollywood.

Lynne Lafaye (Bergmark)

Deceased Date: 2014-12-01
Harold Benson - June 27th, 2023
Every day, at a class period near the end of the day, I'd go to study hall. Lynne would sit behind me because we were seated alphabetically.  We were supposed to be quiet and I usually studied or did homework.  But Lynne made sure to brighten up the dull study hall by frequently whispering some banter to me.  Gone too soon.............
Jan Chester - November 2nd, 2021
One summer I had walked to Lynne's house because Denise Oscarson was there. It was about a good 7 mile walk.

I walked up to the front door and knocked.

Unexpectedly, Lynne's older brother answered the door, punched me in the mouth, and slammed the door.

All I could think of was, I don't even know this guy!

It was a longer walk home.

He had many challenges along his short stay, but he managed to overcome them all.

Gerry Carper

Chris Bach - September 14th, 2017
Gerry became a good friend of mine after high school. I introduced him to a friend of mine whom he married. Gerry was a real jokester and between him and Mike Cloud, his wife Kathy and I were always in stiches. He was a gifted guy in many ways and is missed.
Jonathan Neumark - May 15th, 2017
Gerry Carper was the new boy from Knoxville, Iowa who joined our Red Oak fifth-grade class, and it was instantly obvious that he was a superior athlete and leader in every sport. As the oldest child in a large family he no doubt understood the teamwork it took to get through each day and that everyone was equal and deserved respect. Classmates for five years, including senior math at DHS, I saw the disciplined daily effort he put into his academics. From his educator father he understood that proper concentration on his classwork was the priority that would permit him to pursue athletics to a high level: football and basketball star at DHS and varsity football at Illinois State.
Harold Benson - December 5th, 2016
Gerry.........the loyal, patient, strong silent friend, on and off the court and in my mind forever.

Mike Cloud

Deceased Date: 2018-06-24
Jan Chester - November 2nd, 2021
Mike was my best friend for years. We went to the prestigious University of Texas at El Paso together.

There are so many stories I could tell about Cloud, but they wouldn't be allowed here.

He was the only person in the world I could talk to about literally anything. Truly. Everyone should have that experience.

I hope they don't use money where you are.... because I know you just happened to have forgotten your wallet!

Miss you so much Cloudy.

Steve Leighton - September 19th, 2018
Very sad to hear of Mike's passing. I had hoped to see him at the reunion and talk about old times. The summer after we graduated, Mike, Scott Sickel, and I and drove to Montreal to see Expo '67. Three of us in a VW bug with the front passenger seat turned facing backward. A rigged up portable B&W TV. Cruise control was a brick on the gas pedal. What a road trip. One evening we drove across the border into NY state in the hopes of buying some beer. I can't remember if we were succesful but we stayed in a flea-bag motel with plastic sheets. On the way home, we had to stop at the Toledo, OH airport to drop Mike off to board a plane to go somewhere. When Mike left for college, he asked me a favor: "Could you get my motorcycle up to Waukegan for maintenance? My Mom will follow you. Are you kidding? Sure (Suzuki X6 Hustler)." Turns out the problem was the throttle was stuck on wide open and the only way to control the bike was by turning off the key. Going through intersetction of Waukegan Road and Deerpath in Lake Forest at over 70 and losing Mom. I also remember flying with Mike in Florida. He, and instructor, Mike Kadison and me in a Cessna. We flew over the Vehicle Assemby Building at (then) Cape Canaveral. I'm not sure we had clearance but it was quite a sight. When they landed on the moon in 1969, I remembered that flight. Then and many times since. Mike was a genuinely good guy with way fewer inhibitions than I, and it was always so much fun to hang out with him. I will miss him.
Jonathan Neumark - August 8th, 2018
I was so sorry to see the sad news of Mike's passing nine months after our 50-year DHS reunion. He was one of the really good guys (and the tallest) in our Chamberlain session (homeroom), which has now seen six of its 1967 graduates shuffle off this mortal coil, in addition to Mr. Chamberlain himself in 2006, who was still a young 64.

We thought at the time (back in the fall of 1965) that it was so fitting for someone as cool as Mike to have a current number one record that we took to be in his honor: none other than the Rolling Stones' "Get Off of Mike Cloud!"

In recent years he complimented us Red Oakies for staying in touch with each other. Knowing that we had reconnected with him gave me hope that I would see him at the reunion. Again, very sad it didn't happen. Another who will be missed by all.

Phil Coomes

Jonathan Neumark - May 28th, 2017
If I were asked to name a most memorable classmate from any single class at DHS, it would probably be Phil Coomes due to our having been each other's sole support system in freshman P.E. during the swimming unit, as we were the only non-swimmers in swimming fanatic (and head coach) Mr. Smith's class. Our survival strategy was to remain as inconspicuous as possible in a corner of the shallow end, pretending to be engrossed in our floating and kicking exercises. Having each other to talk to kept that phase of the class (which felt like an eternity) from being unbearable for us. Phil was a sincere, very good guy; and I was saddened to learn that he had passed away at such a young age.

Sandy Lehre (Crocoll)

Dan Field

Deceased Date: 2014-01-27
Jonathan Neumark - May 11th, 2017
Dan Field was an impressive classmate in senior Economics/Sociology at DHS. His probing questions challenged the teachers; but given that he later attained the office of Lake County Special Assistant State's Attorney, in retrospect it all made sense. Our paths later crossed as postgraduates (he was in law school) at the U of I downstate when we briefly resided in the same off-campus apartment building. Then, as further coincidence would have it, 25 to 30 years later I got to know him again: as his two honor-student daughters' French teacher at Lake Forest HS. His sudden passing in early 2014 left a terrible void for his adoring family, his friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed at this reunion.

Mike Flint

Deceased Date: 2017-07-18
Obituary:
FLINT, Michael Patterson Flint, 68, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2017, in Bend, Oreg., after a long illness. He was born on July 5, 1949, in Evansville, Ind., to Arthur H. Flint, Jr, and Bette (Patterson) Flint. He attended Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Ill., and Illinois State University. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in Zoology. He was a long-time resident of Tucson, Ariz., where he was General Curator of the Reid Park Zoo for thirty years. His zoo career took him from rehabilitating baby lions in his kitchen to leading safaris in Tanzania to researching giant anteaters in Brazil. He loved his family, playing the guitar, and the occasional contact croquet game. He leaves behind two daughters, Bethany Flint of Bend, and Kathleen Flint Ehm of South Setauket, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Anika and Sophie Groener, Finn Ehm, and Jane Ditzel; three brothers, Steve Flint of Half Moon Bay, Calif., Christopher Flint of Tucson, and Patrick Flint of New Mexico; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Susan Powers Flint, and both his parents. Cremation has taken place in Bend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tucson Zoological Society.
Jeff Mason - August 1st, 2017
I was fortunate enough to make several visits up to Bend to spend some time with Mike and his family before his memory failed him. He would talk about all the great memories he had growing up in Deerfield. Some of his fondest were his junior high days and running with a pack of friends through the neighborhoods of Deerfield. We shared stories of past girlfriends and our football playing days at DHS. He was a hell of a player, a co-captain, and voted MVP of our undefeated football team. Mike was a self-taught, very accomplished guitar player with a valuable guitar collection. He made friends with everyone, was respected by many, was a great son, brother, father, and grandfather, affectionally known to his granddaughters as "Wotan." He will be missed.

Mark Gerstein

Deceased Date: 2020-05-11
Obituary:
from COVID-19. Mark was born on February 8, 1949 to Harold and Bernice (Falstein) in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Deerfield High School and received his B.A. in political science from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign).

Mark established the Green Parrot tavern in Elkhorn, WI before managing national marketing campaigns, notably for Equal-brand sweeteners. He spent the last phase of his professional life caring for the residents of Misericordia, until symptoms of Parkinson's Disease compelled him to retire.

Mark was introspective, tolerant and broad-minded in his opinions, and measured in his speech. He was ecumenical in his love of sports, supporting the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox in equal measure. An avid reader, Mark had a wide range of interests and challenged his intellect daily by completing the New York Times crossword in ink. Mark lived his life to help others and improve the world around him. He overcame personal challenges and inspired family and friends with his determination, selflessness, and kindness. He had many years of sobriety and readily helped others with addiction problems.

His death is a tremendous loss for all fortunate enough to know him. Mark is survived by his daughter Clare, daughter-in-law Katherine, and granddaughters Margaret and Stephanie; his son Jake and daughter-in-law AnJelique; his sister Carla; his sister Mindy and brother-in-law Freddie; and his brother Nathan.

Due to the pandemic conditions, services will be scheduled and announced at a later date. The family suggests donations to the Parkinson's Foundation or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in Mark's memory. Jonathan Neumark - July 13th, 2021
Mark was a friend of mine from our time at Red Oak junior high continuing into college downstate at the University of Illinois where we had political science in common (his major, my minor). He was very intelligent, well read, had a ready wit, and an eye for fun.

The most unforgettable bit of fun we had occurred during the summer after DHS graduation and before college: playing in a young men's 12-inch, fast-pitch softball league. We had a rather ragtag team, but Mark, our captain and stellar slugging shortstop (he was amazingly powerful and skillful), was an RBI machine who made us competitive in the league -- which, in turn, made this an exciting and memorable experience.

Eric Ghianni

He is survived by Ann Ghianni, his loving wife of 38 years. Other survivors include daughter and son-in-law Maria and Michael Ghianni-Wilkinson, and daughter and son-in-law Ana and Joshua Greer; grandsons Sabatino and Emilio Greer; brother and sister-in-law Tim and Suzanne Ghianni; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Neal and Cheri Davenport, Matt Davenport and Victoria Venier, Ginger and Vinny DeFillipo; and beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30, until the service time at 12 noon, at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville, Tennessee, 37204.

A graduate of Iowa State University, where he played football, Eric began his professional life as a graphic artist. He worked for several years at Comfortzone swimming-pool-heater manufacturer, was self employed as a graphic artist, before he decided he wanted to take his love of art to schoolchildren. Eric went back to school at Middle Tennessee State University and then became an art teacher at West Elementary School in Mount Juliet until he retired.

He was a lifelong artist in multiple media forms. He also enjoyed fixing and building things in his house and yard. An avid landscaper and vegetable farmer, he was proud of his accomplishments and creations. He also loved helping with outdoor tasks and landscaping with his daughters at their homes. Eric liked talking about history and about solving the world’s problems. He was always ready to raise a toast in someone’s honor. Eric was a kind man, but even he surprised himself and his family by how quickly and completely his grandsons captured his heart and filled his soul.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal rescue of your choice in his honor. Eric was an avid lover of cats and was particularly fond of Nashville Humane Association where he adopted many of his animal friends.
Jonathan Neumark - March 29th, 2024
Eric was an exceptionally strong and successful athlete at DHS, whom I remember for his prowess in football and wrestling. He was all-conference in both sports. After graduation, our fast-pitch softball team captained by Mark Gerstein [See my tribute above to Mark] was fortunate to be able to bring him aboard in midsummer as our catcher. He was a very intelligent, sympathetic and easygoing individual with a primary interest in artistic endeavors. Always fun to be around. I was glad to hear that he had joined the ranks of us who pursued a career in education.

In 8th grade Joanne and I went by train down to an International Trade Show at McKormick Place. We felt we were pretty grown up and enjoyed sampling many different kinds of ethnic foods. When we got to a booth where they had samples of coffee from somewhere in South America, we decided to try it. It was served in very small cups so we drank it quickly in one unforgettable swig. Yikes! It was hot, strong and quite bitter. It took our breath away and to this day I do not drink coffee.

Leonard Jensky, 60, cherished father of Heather and Shayna Jensky; beloved son of Estelle Plous and the late Seymour Jensky; loving brother of Madelyn Miller; dear friend of many. Len never heard a joke he didn't laugh at and never met a person he didn't like. His outgoing personality and contagious smile made everyone his friend.
Jonathan Neumark - May 20th, 2017

As we read above, the passing of Len Jensky was a major loss for his family and others who knew him. I experienced the sad news with a jolt of distress to the spirit, trying to grapple with the reality that he was the first of the Woodridge neighborhood/West Ridge School friends I grew up with (from Cub Scouts to college) to depart this world. He was a selfless, sincere and good-natured guy (and one who was good with gadgets and gizmos) from a warm and caring family. He will definitely be missed at this 50-year reunion celebration (54 since we ventured forth from Red Oak).

Harold Benson - December 5th, 2016
Lenny always put a smile on my face, and was a magnet of friendship. He was easy on the eyes, mind and heart. May he rest in peace.

Cathy was my beautiful mother. She raised three children, and is missed very much by all of us.

Mark and I went to senior prom together after my original date told me he and his girlfriend got back together. It ended up to be the best thing for me. We had so much fun together and Mark was a real gentleman. We went to every activity offered over the week-end and I will always remember Mark fondly.

William (Bill) Krucks

Deceased Date: 2021-07-23
Obituary:
William "Bill" Norman Krucks, age 71, passed away peacefully at his home in Winnetka on July 23rd with his wife Linda and family by his side. William was born in Chicago on October 28, 1949. He grew up in Deerfield and would later attain degrees from Tulane University followed by the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he graduated first in his class, served as editor of the Mississippi Law Journal, and was a member of the Moot Court Board. He initially practiced law in Chicago at a prominent law firm. In June 1983, William took a momentous and courageous step as an entrepreneurial attorney that would later largely define his career and that of hundreds of others. Together with five partners and six staff, William departed his firm and co-founded a new law firm, Freeborn & Peters LLP, to pursue their vision of what the practice of law could be. At the time they did not have an office, desks, or telephones, and moved into an unfinished space with no walls, rented metal desks, and wires hanging from the ceiling. Now some 38 years later, that vision William embarked on at the young age of just 33 years old, has now grown to a law firm ranked among Chicago's elite that employs more than 350 people across five national offices in four states.

As an avid reader and lifelong student, William's reputation for winning was due, in no small part, to the extra hours he spent each day reading the latest in legal opinions and new case law to ensure that his clients were well informed and represented. Many of his clients relied on him for more than 30 years, a tribute to their long found successful partnership. William was recognized among the best in his field. He was named a Leading Lawyer in the fields of Labor, Employment, and Insurance Defense Law by the Leading Lawyers Network, a designation accorded to less than five percent of practicing lawyers in the United States. Additionally, William was recently nominated as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (2011) and Fellow of the College of Workers' Compensation Lawyers.

Despite his passion for the law, William's storied life of accomplishment was not limited to the court room alone. He cared deeply about public service and felt it important to give back to and provide leadership for his community. From 2010-11, William was elected to serve as Chair of the Village of Winnetka Caucus Council. In successive years, he would go on to serve as a Commissioner of the Zoning Board of Appeals, Chair of the Winnetka Plan Commission, as well as Village Trustee and Member of the Winnetka Village Council from 2014-17. William also served as a Member of the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Advisory Board since 2017. Apart from his law practice and civic leadership, William also served as Chairman, Director, and Vice President & General Counsel for the Rauland-Borg Corporation. Yet, he still found time to make it home for family dinner every night and was always there to coach his girls' soccer teams and help with science projects. Along with his wife, William poured any extra time into the activities his children loved. Together they held multiple roles within the Trevian Girls Softball Association and could often be found cheering on the sidelines of their children's various sporting events.

Notwithstanding his immeasurable contributions to the Firm, the legal profession, and his community, he will be remembered most for being a loving Husband and Father who never stopped giving of himself. At the end of the day, William's life was filled with love. He loved his Cigarette Racing boat, the annual fishing trips he took with his buddies, his passion for rock and roll, and his ever-improving golf game.

He is survived by his beloved wife Linda, brother Kenneth R. Krucks, children Jaylee (McGarvey) House, Cary (Ashley) Levine, Kathryn "Kiki" Krucks, Greta Krucks Montagano, Laura (Matt) Strautman, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Lorraine (Rauland) Krucks.

In accordance with William and Linda's wishes, he will be laid to rest in a private family service. Memorial contributions in William's memory may be made to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF): https://give.themmrf.org/William-N-Krucks

Just like he dealt with each experience in life, William managed his illness with strength and grace, and chose to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. On his final day, he was surrounded by his children and his wife, who he adored more than anything else in the world.
Jonathan Neumark - September 18th, 2022
I knew Bill from two classes, one academic and one P.E. He was a great, good-natured guy and a truly impressive fellow student who took it all in stride, very even-keeled. Not only was he always prepared in his work, but he also spoke well in class with a thorough understanding of the subject matter. So it was hardly surprising to read about his superlatively distinguished career as an attorney, as well as his multiple other accomplishments.

If I have an abundance of pride in the high school I graduated from, it is in large part due to having spent my time there in the company of exceptional people like Bill and the others for whom I have written tributes.

William Lanphier

Deceased Date: 2022-11-04
Obituary:
Bill Lanphier was most widely known as the bassist for Madonna's Virgin tour, which included performing on keyboard bass at the 1985 Live Aid concert. He also toured with The Rippingtons as their original bassist with credits on their first two albums. A busy session player, Bill recorded and performed with other notables such as Richard Carpenter, Harry Chapin, and Linda Ronstadt. He had a passion for playing odd-meter Balkan music and self-published a songbook of instrumental transcriptions. In later years, Bill led a weekly jam for budding jazz musicians. A sampling of his musical knowledge appears in articles he wrote for Bass Player, Bassics, and Bass Guitar.

As a journalist, his byline was WBGO-Wild Bill Get Off. An avid ATV rider who loved the dunes in particular, Bill reported on races, models, and gear. One of his faves was covering the Pont de Vaux Mondial du Quad. He was an editor for Hi-Torque publications in the 90s, and his history of the lunar rover was published in UTV Sports, April 2015 issue.

Bill had a very good eye when it came to photography, and many of his own photos accompany his magazine articles. His work earned him a nomination for the American Motorcyclist Association's Sports Photojournalist of the Year in 2003. Some of his early photographs depicting the suburbs of Chicago were exhibited in Grayslake, IL, in 2009.

William Ray Lanphier was born in Los Angeles on July 18, 1949, to Robert Flood Lanphier and Margaret, nee Ray, Lanphier. As a child, he lived in Houston, Memphis, and the Chicago area. Bill graduated from Deerfield High School in 1967 and attended DePaul University. He learned piano as a child, played drums in high school, and started playing bass at 19 under the tutelage of Steve Rodby. After a solid start to his career as a musician in Chicago, Bill moved to Los Angeles. Highlights of his time there can be seen in his self-compiled YouTube montage entitled "1980s LA music scene and me." The last twenty years of his life were spent in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he met his significant other, Janice Woo, in 2012. He died at home in Albany, CA, on November 4, 2022; the immediate cause being listed as neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Bill is survived by his many friends and a handful of distant cousins.

A celebration of life is planned for mid-July 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of the East Bay.

I knew Bill back in DHS days only in passing. But I watched the You Tube videos of Bill's performances on bass as a member of various professional bands. EXCELLENT WORK! Since I'm a semi-professional keyboard player, I wish now I had kept up with him after graduation. He played jazz, probably the most interesting and creative type of Western music around these days, and he played like a real pro. Great talent. I am so proud of him and so sorry he has left us!

Paula Spring (Longtin)

Deceased Date: 2021-09-08
Obituary:
Paula Lea Spring, 71, of Warsaw, MO, passed away September 8, 2021 at NorthCare Hospice House. She was born October 30, 1949 in Illinois, the daughter of Richard and Patricia Longtin. Paula grew up in Illinois and graduated from Deerfield High School in 1967. She went on to earn a BA in Journalism from the University of Missouri and later a Masters in Journalism also from the University of Missouri. Paula was a member of Alpha Chi Omega while at the University of Missouri.

Paula was united in marriage to Dr. James E. Spring on August 7, 1971 in Chicago, Illinois. They first made their home in Kansas City, later moving to Warsaw in 1977 after James’s service in the Air Force. Paula worked for one of the Kansas City news channels while in Kansas City, then later wrote for the Benton County Enterprise in Warsaw. Her column was “The County Line.” She transitioned to Ozark 98 (later 97.1 The Lake) radio station as a news reporter over the noon hour and retired after many years of dedicated reporting. In her later years, Paula wrote for L.O. Profile Magazine featuring the Lake of the Ozarks. Paula was a member and former President of the Warsaw School Board for many years and served on the State of Missouri’s School Board. She served on the boards for the Benton County Community Foundation, the Warsaw Education Foundation, and the State Fair Community College Foundation. Paula helped create the Warsaw Academic Excellence Awards. She served on the Benton County Extension Council, and was named to the MU Extension Leader’s Honor Roll for her efforts in championing MU Extension in Benton County. Paula was also a member of Mother’s Night Out.

After her husband’s passing, in conjunction with Benton County Health Department, Paula was instrumental in raising money for life-saving AED machines for the community by coordinating the AED Fore The Heart Golf Tournament.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Patricia Longtin; her beloved husband, Dr. James E. Spring; and her sister, Pamela Brenneis.

Paula is survived by her daughter, Megan Spring (Angie) of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; the daughter of her heart, Heidi Schmidt (Jason) of Sedalia, Missouri; her sister-in-law, Dr. Joyce West of Okemos, Michigan; her niece, Dr. Kristine Annable of Okemos, Michigan; and her great-niece and nephew, Katie Burkhardt and Will Burkhardt; as well as other relatives and many friends.
Jonathan Neumark - November 6th, 2021
The news of Paula's recent passing is sad indeed, and it is certainly a great loss for her family, friends and community.

Having worked as a member of the editorial staff of Deerprints under her exceedingly capable leadership senior year, I was not surprised that she would go on to earn two degrees from the prestigious School of Journalism at the University of Missouri and pursue a long and distinguished career in news media.

Her display of so many competencies as Deerprints editor-in-chief was dazzling, as was her commitment to the school community (foretelling her future school board, council and foundation service).

Still, she always had time for everyone and couldn't have been a more helpful or nicer person.

Mike and I lived right around the corner from each other, and who didn't have a crush on him, look at that picture. He always had that bad boy, James Dean kind of way about him, but you couldn't help but like him. A smile that would light up the night. Wanted to be an actor, and I have to confess whenever I'm watching an old move I still read the credits watching for his name. I think about him often. RIP Mike.

Mike was a really nice guy and I had a huge secret crush on him.

Bill Milligan

Deceased Date: 2012-01-03
Jonathan Neumark - May 17th, 2017
To this day any mention of the Philadelphia Phillies makes me think of Bill Milligan, the only Phillies fan I have ever known. Our junior high science fair project may have flopped, but that didn't faze us, due to the fun we had with it. A welcome familiar face in fourth-period freshman algebra the first day at DHS, we went to lunch together, met up with Mark Verbofsky, and we became the three lunch musketeers, sitting together every day the entire school year. Sadly, they are both gone, so we can never reminisce about how skilled at matchbox football we became. Bill was an unpretentious, easy-going, comfortable-in-his-own-skin sort of guy whom I would expect always remained that way.

Bob Mittelman

Deceased Date: 2023-12-03
Obituary:
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Caring Cremations - Chicago on Dec. 14, 2023.

Robert Hirsch Mittelman, died unexpectedly at his home in Chicago from a heart attack the first week in December, 2023, one month shy of his 75th birthday.

Bob was born in Chicago and grew up in Highland Park, attending Red Oak Elementary and Deerfield High School. He attended American University in Washington D.C and graduated from Chicago's DePaul Law School, where he was editor of the law review. He was a retired attorney who enjoyed reading, baking cheesecakes, and day-trading. Much of his time was spent on a years-long project about the origins of Islam, Judaism, and the state of Israel that he was hoping to turn into a book. He was a kind, gentle and generous man, who took great delight in his 3-year-old grandniece, Sunny and 1.5-year-old grandnephew, George.

He will be greatly missed by his sister Sue in California and his Chicago-area family, brother Rick (Jan), nephews Niel (Michelle) and Greg (Michelle) and many other friends and family. A memorial gathering will be held in January at the home of his brother Rick - date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory to the Greater Chicago Food Depository would be appreciated: https://www.chicagosfoodbank.org/get-involved/give/

I write this the day after Bob passed away. I was informed on that Saturday morning by an email from a mutual friend, and I almost fainted!! After that, it was shock and tears. Bob was a great friend. He was mild mannered, bright, a great listener, always ready to help. He had a keen sense of curiosity about a wide variety of things in life. Always reliable. Very patient. Had your back. I'll miss him..........already the loss is sinking in. He was working for years on a book. Now it will remain incomplete. May his soul be bound up in eternal life:
Jonathan Neumark - December 9th, 2023
Bob Mittelman was my close friend in junior high and high school, where we were on the Deerprints staff together. He went to American University in Washington (DC), DePaul University College of Law, and then on to a long career as an attorney in Chicago. After retirement we got together on a number of occasions and always had an enjoyable time. Favorite memories include: 1) from 8th grade, a superb (hilarious but harmless) prank in the Red Oak school library (call it "book display falling dominos"); 2) pre-college fast-pitch league softball: he was our excellent left-fielder and #3 hitter (between me and Mark Gerstein in the lineup) [See my tribute to Mark]; 3) going to Cubs games and DHS sports events together, and 4) the evening during college summer break when we went to Wise Fools Pub to see Chicago blues great Otis Rush, who joined us at our table after his set, undoubtedly because Bob had kept calling out an encore request that Otis couldn't resist.
