Mike Cloud

Mike Cloud

2018-06-24

Mike was my best friend for years. We went to the prestigious University of Texas at El Paso together.  There are so many stories I could tell about Cloud, but they wouldn't be allowed here.  He was the only person in the world I could talk to about literally anything. Truly. Everyone should have that experience. I hope they don't use money where you are.... because I know you just happened to have forgotten your wallet! Miss you so much Cloudy.

Very sad to hear of Mike's passing. I had hoped to see him at the reunion and talk about old times. The summer after we graduated, Mike, Scott Sickel, and I and drove to Montreal to see Expo '67. Three of us in a VW bug with the front passenger seat turned facing backward. A rigged up portable B&W TV. Cruise control was a brick on the gas pedal. What a road trip. One evening we drove across the border into NY state in the hopes of buying some beer. I can't remember if we were succesful but we stayed in a flea-bag motel with plastic sheets. On the way home, we had to stop at the Toledo, OH airport to drop Mike off to board a plane to go somewhere. When Mike left for college, he asked me a favor: "Could you get my motorcycle up to Waukegan for maintenance? My Mom will follow you. Are you kidding? Sure (Suzuki X6 Hustler)." Turns out the problem was the throttle was stuck on wide open and the only way to control the bike was by turning off the key. Going through intersetction of Waukegan Road and Deerpath in Lake Forest at over 70 and losing Mom. I also remember flying with Mike in Florida. He, and instructor, Mike Kadison and me in a Cessna. We flew over the Vehicle Assemby Building at (then) Cape Canaveral. I'm not sure we had clearance but it was quite a sight. When they landed on the moon in 1969, I remembered that flight. Then and many times since. Mike was a genuinely good guy with way fewer inhibitions than I, and it was always so much fun to hang out with him. I will miss him.

I was so sorry to see the sad news of Mike's passing nine months after our 50-year DHS reunion. He was one of the really good guys (and the tallest) in our Chamberlain session (homeroom), which has now seen six of its 1967 graduates shuffle off this mortal coil, in addition to Mr. Chamberlain himself in 2006, who was still a young 64. We thought at the time (back in the fall of 1965) that it was so fitting for someone as cool as Mike to have a current number one record that we took to be in his honor: none other than the Rolling Stones' "Get Off of Mike Cloud!"  In recent years he complimented us Red Oakies for staying in touch with each other. Knowing that we had reconnected with him gave me hope that I would see him at the reunion. Again, very sad it didn't happen. Another who will be missed by all.
